My daughter who has a WiFi only iPad always uses iMessage and FaceTime with her friends and she doesn't have a phone number.

This was a perfect opportunity for Android to match iMessage and FaceTime which are tied to your Apple ID while also able to communicate with phone numbers.

This is a very stupid idea on Google's part. Hangouts is more useful because you can communicate with more Android users because it was tied to your Gmail account while Duo is tied to your phone number which limits your audience to friends with phone numbers in your address book.
